The Science
of Eco-Asset Management (continued)
The related field of conservation
biology serves to promote
human health & welfare by developing a scientific
basis for managing earth's ecosystems and for arresting
environmental deterioration. As with restoration ecology,
conservation biology demands wide collaboration with
other scientists, social scientists, government agencies,
public interest group and the business community. Conservation
biologists work toward building a sound basis for conserving,
restoring and managing earth's biotic resources, while
understanding factors that lead to declining environmental
security, and unearthing the practical solutions these
problems require.
See Stanford
University's Center for Conservation Biology for
examples of how this discipline integrates biological, economic,
anthropological, legal, and other social science perspectives.
As systematic knowledge accumulates, scientists
disseminate it to agencies, landowners and practitioners who
must be informed and involved if ecological restoration efforts
are to be managed effectively.
Ecosystem management practitioners offer fee-based
consultations if their experience, insight and still is keen
enough to support professional services. Since the beginning
of the modern environmental movement in the 1970s, environmental
consulting firms have served as an important business sector.
Now, aside from exclusively supporting environmental regulatory
compliance needs for clients, many firms are branching out
to embrace ecological PERC as the basis for whole new lines
of business.
Companies such as Entrix,
Inc., Environmental
Banc & Exchange, and H.T.
Harvey & Associates develop "strategies
that provide economic incentives for environmental solutions."
These companies "forge common ground between the
business and environmental communities, and, by focusing
on opportunities that meet stringent economic and environmental
objectives, (they demonstrate) that investment in the
environment can be profitable to both the ecosystem
and the investor."
For your convenience EAG has compiled additional
lists of consultants, organizations, agencies and associations

the management of ecological assets:
